Textile Memory Place VI Process

Here’s a look into the process of my most recent work. Starting from the initial digital rendering to the stretching and sizing.
The stitching portion of the work is finished and next I will add genuine silver leaf to complete the composition.
Gold leaf is a staple of many of my previous works, but this is my first time using silver. I think it will compliment this piece beautifully.

TEXTILE MEMORY PLACE II PROCESS

My most recent series, Textile Memory Place, explores the use of natural elemental pigments and traditional oil paint making processes to compliment my textile figuration.

Here is a look at the process for the work Textile Memory Place II, 2023. This work uses iron oxide to create the visceral red color.

PINTA MIAMI 2022

Here are some photos of my work in PINTA ART FAIR 2022 presented with Montenegro Art Projects during Art Basel Miami in December of last year.
The collective show was titled El Tejido Como un Acto de Resistencia, and was exhibited in booth A5 from Novmeber 30 - December 4.

Las hojas del Yarumo

Many of you know about my obsessive fascination with these leaves. When I first moved to Colombia and encountered them on the streets of Bogotá, I saw them as human-like forms. I couldn’t escape the parallels between their forms and structures and those of my own body. I collected photos of fallen leaves from across the city and began this series of studies which became the foundation of the series Carne de mi Carne.

Portland Art Museum

WILD WOMAN was commissioned to create the new work Magdalena, 2022 for the Portland Art Museum in collaboration the exhibition: Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivero and Mexican Modernism.
Now on view until August 29th

Inspired by the lithograph, Frida and the Miscarriage (1932), this work is a self-examination of the female figure. Embracing processes of self-reflection, the full length figure speaks to embodiments of pain, the act of opening oneself to explore our traumas and penetrating deep roots of suffering that can be attached to feminine identity.

Inspired by Kahlo's power and vulnerability, this piece engages self-critical narratives and feelings of shame or inadequateness that eventually breakthrough to discovery and new levels of consciousness and creativity. Magdalena highlights the feminine act of strengthening through vulnerability; the most intimate parts of the self exposed to create a path forward.

This piece includes detailed patchwork inspired by the traditional tiles prevalent in Mexican architecture and found in Frida's house in Coyoacán, Mexico, as well as the geometric embroidery techniques of artisan Mexican textiles that composed Frida's wardrobe. Squares, when connected, create a new meaning and tell stories of Mexican culture and folklore. This patchwork represents the artwork, craftsmanship, and wisdom passed down from one generation of women to the next.

Everything flows

Here are a few updates:

I am continuing my exploration of the NFT space. I am developing concrete concepts on how to utilize this tech in a physical work NFT. Meanwhile, I am preparing for a gallery show of NFT works.

Here are some still images of pieces for this upcoming show. These works, both textile and digital paintings, will be rendered and animated.

NFT

Outside of my textile works, I have been diving fully into the world of digital art. And, as well into the exciting revolution in art that is the NFT.
I am working in painting digitally and developing new and unconventional processes. I have been endlessly inspired by the possibilities in this new medium. I am also feeling a new admiration for my artistic ability through this process of seeing my style and voice translate so seamlessly to this unknown realm.

Today I have added a new section to the website with the first three works of my new series DESAPARICIONES. This is my first mixed media series including both monumental stitched textile works as well as digital paintings. I am extremely excited about this series and this growth in diversity in my portfolio.

Soon, I will be adding my newly minted NFTs here on my website with links to the NFT platforms that are selling my work.

Thank you for coming along with me on this exploration, and I look forward to sharing more incurable works very soon.

Work in progress detail photos

This larger than life figurative work had been the center of my attention for 2 months now.
The texture and shapes that are taking form are quite mesmerizing.

Here is a look at it from my perspective under the needle.

YARUMO STUDY NO. 11

I’ve just finished another gigantic Yarumo leaf to be added to the series of studies.

I can’t quite explain my fascination with this plant. It’s structure, flesh and veins are so human-like. I can’t stop seeing my own physical body in these leaves.
The obsession and fascination continues to grow. Although my next work will be a figure entirely different, I do see myself returning to these beautiful creatures many times again.

First of 2021

The first piece to be born of this year was a commissioned collaborative garment with my partner’s incredible vision that is A NEW CROSS.
I packed my machine in it’s travel case along with some books and pieces of inspiration and passed two hours in the car on my way to a paradise of fruit trees and bird songs just outside of cold rainy Bogotá.
This piece was a new challenge for me in many ways. I wanted to look at the male figure and see within it the same energy and divinity I see in that of the feminine.
I am attracted to the androgyny of this figure and the future of gender identity that it speaks to.

I felt incredibly inspired and at peace working in this place amongst the trees. Which has provoked a permanent change of scenery as my partner and I work on building our home and studio in this paradise. Still not too far removed from the art world and friends in Bogotá.
